Baseball Upsets No. 16 Monks 6-3 in GNAC Tournament
STANDISH, Maine – The long ball helped the Johnson & Wales University baseball team advance in the GNAC Tournament. The Wildcats' first and last runs came from the long ball as they defeated 16th-ranked St. Joseph's College, 6-3, on Thursday.

Records:
St. Joseph's: 31-7
Johnson & Wales: 22-17

Dave Matthews (JWU): 3-5, 1 R, 3 RBI
Rob Ballinger (JWU): 1-4, 2 R

Of Note:
Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) got the Wildcats off to a fast start when he jacked a two-run home run in the top of the first. He scored Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) with a single in the top of the fifth.

Freshman Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) got the scoring started in the sixth when he laced a single down the right field line to score Ivan Reyes (Cranston, RI). Maracic then scored on a balk.

Senior Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) padded JWU's lead when he blasted a solo home run in the top of the seventh. It was the first home run of his career.      

JWU has 10 home runs on the year, its most since the 2011 team hit 20.

Sophomore Brandon Budlong (Cranston, RI) went the distance on the mound to get his sixth win of the year. He gave up three runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

The Wildcats move on in the winner's bracket of the GNAC Tournament. They'll face the winner of the Lasell-Suffolk game at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.
