NEW HAVEN, Conn.– The Johnson & Wales University baseball team kept pace with the conference leaders by sweeping a doubleheader at Albertus Magnus on Sunday. The Wildcats took the first game, 10-0, then won game two, 7-1.
Johnson & Wales: 17-14, 7-5 GNAC
Albertus Magnus: 8-18, 3-7 GNAC
Five runs in the third and fourth innings broke open game one for the Wildcats. First baseman Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) doubled home two runs in the third. A pair of AMC miscues in the fourth led to three runs.
Sophomore Brandon Budlong (Cranston, RI) was nearly flawless on the mound. He surrendered just two hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk.
The bottom of the JWU lineup accounted for seven of its 11 hits. Rookie third baseman Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including a two-run single during a four-run third inning. He added an RBI double in the fifth.
Game two starting pitcher James Smiegocki (Lambertville, NJ) was just as dazzling as he improved to 4-0. He struck out seven batters while only giving up one run on four hits.
The Wildcats go on the road Tuesday to take on Babson at 3:30 p.m.
