PROVIDENCE, RI – Getting back to the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex was the remedy the Johnson & Wales University baseball team needed. The Wildcats stopped a three-game slide by defeating Wentworth, 7-6, on Thursday.
Johnson & Wales: 14-13
Senior Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two-run double to score Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) and Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.). Cabral has 97 hits in his JWU career.
Matthews led all players with a career-high 5-for-5 performance. His fourth hit was an RBI single during a three-run sixth inning.
Freshman Tom Doran (West Warwick, RI) threw six innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. He surrendered five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Josh Mousseau (Woonsocket, RI) got the final three outs for his second save.
Wentworth had three players pick up two or more hits. First baseman Tyler Weninger drove in two runs in the fifth with his second double of the day. Jordan Burst picked up his fourth hit in the ninth when he singled and came around to score as the Leopards pulled within 7-6.
The game could have been a higher-scoring affair as the two teams combined to strand 19 runners on base.
Johnson & Wales travels to Framingham State on Friday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
