NEWPORT, RI – For seven innings the Johnson & Wales University baseball team held its own against Salve Regina, the second-ranked team in the region. The Seahawks scored eight runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Wildcats 12-5 on Tuesday.
Johnson & Wales: 13-13
Salve Regina: 22-4
The Wildcats got off to a fast start in the top of the first. Shortstop Lou Umberto (Cranston, RI) opened the scoring with a double as part of his team-high three hits. Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) beat out a double play attempt to score Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) and give JWU a 3-0 lead.
Salve Regina scored in its first three at-bats to take the lead, but JWU answered with runs in the fifth and six innings. Freshman Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) drove in Cabral for his second run then Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) scored on an error.
Errors and free passes allowed the Seahawks to score most of their runs in the eighth. Salve Regina drew two walks with the bases loaded then an error with two outs allowed two more runs to score.
The Wildcats return home to take on Wentworth on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The game was postponed on March 27 due to inclement weather.
