PROVIDENCE, RI – Five runs in the first three innings and five more in the final three innings led the Johnson & Wales University baseball team to victory on Thursday. The Wildcats went across town to beat Rhode Island College, 11-1.

Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) drew a one-out walk in the top of the first then scored on a Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) double. Matthews came around to score on a single by Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI).
The RIC pitchers helped the Wildcats score a number of their runs. During the three-run third inning, Ivan Reyes (Cranston, RI) was hit by a pitch to score Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI). Chris Baldwin (Pawtucket, RI) scored twice on errors in the sixth and eighth innings.
Sophomore James Smiegocki (Lambertville, NJ) only gave up one unearned run in eight innings of work with five strikeouts. Ballinger led the way with three hits while Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) went 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Wildcats are back at home on Friday when they host Roger Williams at 3 p.m. It's the team's Striking Out Cancer game with all donations going to the Rhode Island chapter of the Pink Heals organization.
