Leominster, Mass. - The Johnson & Wales University baseball team battled back from a two-run deficit in the top of ninth inning only to give up the winning run in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats lost 7-6 at Becker on Monday.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 11-9. The Hawks improved to 10-9.
Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) extended his on-base streak to 15 games with a double to lead off the game. He scored on a Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) groundout.
Every time the Wildcats scored, Ballinger was somewhere in the mix. His second double in the fifth inning scored Cam Newell (Westerly, RI) and started a three- run inning. Ballinger came around to score as JWU tied the game at 4-4.
After Becker scored in the eighth to open a 6-4 lead, Ballinger got the Wildcats going in the ninth. His fourth double scored Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI), who reached on an error. Lou Umberto (Cranston, RI) ripped a double to score Ballinger.
Becker reliever Michael Iacovelli came on to get the Hawks out of the jam. Josiah Shepard drew a walk, stole second and scored on a single given up by reliever Josh Mousseau (Woonsocket, RI) who was saddled with the loss.
Johnson & Wales is back in action when it hosts crosstown rival Rhode Island College at 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
