PROVIDENCE, RI – A back and fourth game finally broke in favor of the Johnson & Wales University baseball team in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game with Wesleyan. Designated hitter Edison Mercado's RBI single scored the eventual winning run in the 4-3 victory over the Cardinals.
Johnson & Wales: 8-6
The Cardinals struck for a pair of the runs in the top of the first off JWU starter Tom Doran (West Warrick, RI) as made his first collegiate start. The Wildcats answered in their half of the inning when Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI) singled with the bases loaded and Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) drew a bases loaded walk.
Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) gave Johnson & Wales a short-lived lead in the fifth when doubled down the left field line to score Lou Umberto (Cranston, RI). Umberto was one of two Wildcats to record a pair of hits. A JWU error allowed Nick Miceli to score the tying run in the top of the sixth. Miceli went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI.
The second Mercado (Providence, RI) hit of the day put the Wildcats ahead in seventh. Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on the Mercado single to centerfield off Dylan Millhouse. Millhouse was saddled with the loss.
Doran didn't factor into the decision, but had a good outing as he gave up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work. Lane Compton (Freeland, Mich.) came on to get the final two outs in the seventh to pick up the victory and improve to 3-1. Keith Grant (East Providence, RI) recorded the final out to for his first save of the season.
Johnson & Wales is back at home on Thursday when it hosts Bridgewater State at 3:30 p.m.
