NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball team jumped out to a fast start against the Coast Guard Academy on Monday, but couldn't sustain that momentum for the rest of the game. The Bears came back to beat the Wildcats, 5-3.
The loss dropped JWU to 7-6 while Coast Guard improved to 8-11.
Two Coast Guard errors allowed the Wildcats to score a trio of runs in the first inning. A passed ball brought Rob Ballinger (South Kingstown, RI) home with the first run. Rookie Joe Maracic (Syosset, NY) drove in Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) on a single then an error by the left fielder allowed Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI) to score.
The Bears tied the game with three runs in the second inning then scored the eventual winning run in the sixth off JWU starter Brandon Budlong (Cranston, RI). Even though he took the loss, Budlong only gave up one earned, with four strikeouts.
Johnson & Wales is back at home on Wednesday to take on Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
