PROVIDENCE, RI – Three runs in the third and eighth innings got the Johnson & Wales University baseball team back in the win column. The Wildcats snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-3 decision against Daniel Webster on Thursday.
Daniel Webster: 1-8
Johnson & Wales: 5-5
Armani Henderson (JWU): 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI
Ivan Reyes (JWU): 2-3, 1 R
Lou Umberto (JWU): 2-4, 1 R
Timely hitting allowed the Wildcats to score in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI) lined a single – the first of his two hits - to score Dave Matthews (Newtown, Conn.) from second base.
Matthews scored his second run when he and Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) crossed the plate on a bases-loaded single by Greg Joubert (Cumberland, RI) in the third. Joubert later scored the third run of the inning on a double steal.
JWU starter James Smiegocki (Lambertville, NJ) took a no hitter into the sixth inning before it was broken up by a Dan Mullins two-out single. The sophomore left-hander surrendered just one unearned run with four strikeouts and three walks in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season.
The Wildcats pounded out 11 hits and could have done more damage offensively as they stranded eight runners on base.
