Five JWU Baseball Standouts Earn All-GNAC Honors
Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University baseball squad was honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference as five Wildcats earned post-season recognition. Senior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) was named a first-team All-GNAC as an infielder while junior second baseman Nick Alosco (Mahopac, N.Y.) (pictured on right) was also a first team All-Conference performer. Senior outfielder Waldis Garcia (Lowell, Mass.) was the lone representative on the second team while sophomore Zach Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) and junior Teddy Katz (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were named to the conference’s third team.
Melendez was among the conference leaders in every statistical category, hitting .420 while adding 39 runs and 44 RBI for the Wildcats. He also set a new school record with 12 home runs while notching 17 doubles and 13 stolen bases on the season.
Alosco hit .321 for JWU, scoring a team best 40 runs while adding 42 RBI, 15 doubles, seven home runs and six triples. He also played outstanding defense in the field for the Wildcats.
Garcia proved to
be one of the fastest players on the GNAC, stealing a league best
18 bases while hitting .327 with 35 runs and 18 RBI on the
year. He was also nearly flawless in for the field for JWU,
committing jus two errors in 42 games while patrolling the
outfield.
Boyes made an immediate impact on the Wildcats during his rookie campaign, hitting .346 with 30 runs, 22 RBI and 11 stolen bases. He also played flawlessly in the outfield, going errorless on the season.
Rounding out the All-GNAC performers, Katz was a utility player of the Wildcats and saw action at several positions during the season. He tallied a .340 average with 33 runs and 29 RBI while adding 12 stolen bases and six home runs.
The Wildcats finished the 2010 season with a 15-28 overall record, 8-6 in league play and reached the semifinals of the conference championship against Suffolk
