2010-11 Johnson & Wales University Athletics Year In Review
Men’s Cross Country
Led by head coach Thom Spann, the Wildcats continued their dominance in the GNAC, winning their third straight conference championship and sixth in the program’s history. The squad then recorded a third-place finish at the ECAC Championship and a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division III New England Regional, the highest finish ever for the school.

Women’s Cross Country
The Wildcats returned to the top of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, capturing their third championship in school history. As a team, JWU had five top-five finishes on the season and wrapped up the year with a 35th place finish at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship.

Golf
Once again, the Wildcats had a successful season, capped off by capturing “The Cup,” a Ryder Cup style match against intra-state rival Rhode Island College. The squad finished in the top-five in six tournaments this season, including a second-place finish at the 2010 GNAC Championship where Joe Connor earned Player of the Year honors

Men’s Soccer (4-12-2 Overall, 3-5-1 GNAC)
The Wildcats made strides and showed improvement throughout the season, culminating with a near upset of No. 1 seed Lasell in the quarterfinals of the GNAC Championship.

Women’s Soccer (8-11-1 Overall, 6-5-1 GNAC)
JWU finished in sixth-place in the conference standings and reached the quarterfinals of the conference championship. In addition to their achievements on the field, the Wildcats excelled in the classroom. JWU earned the Academic Team Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Women’s Tennis (7-8 Overall, 4-4 GNAC)
Once again, JWU was competitive throughout the season, playing some of the toughest teams in the region in non-conference action before reaching the semifinals of the GNAC Championship.

Women’s Volleyball (24-13 Overall, 11-1 GNAC)
In her last season at the helm of the program, head coach Jamie Marcoux led the team to the GNAC Championship and a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship where the Wildcats nearly knocked off Stevens Tech. JWU won 20+ games for the seventh straight season and 11th time in school history. In addition to their success on the court, the Wildcats were very active in the community, completing several community service projects throughout the season.

Men’s Basketball (21-9 Overall, 14-4 GNAC)
The Wildcats made an appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since the 2003-04 season. JWU then knocked off host Ramapo in the first round of the tournament for the first NCAA victory in school history. Junior Lamonte Thomas led the country in scoring, averaging 30.4 points per contest, earning D3Hoops.com All-American honors.

Women’s Basketball (8-18 Overall, 5-7 GNAC)
Under first year head coach Robert Johnson, JWU showed glimpses of things to come in the future with steady improvement throughout the season, reaching the quarterfinals of the conference championship.

Hockey (14-12-1 Overall, 10-4 ECAC Northeast)
The Wildcats continued to be one of the elite teams in the ECAC Northeast, notching a third-place finish while reaching the tournament semifinals with an overtime setback against Wentworth. Junior Jeremiah Ketts was named a Reebok/AHCA All-American and was a finalist for the Sid Watson Award while the All-ECAC Northeast team boasted five Wildcats. The team also received votes in the national coaches poll for the first team in school history and had seven players earn ECAC All-Academic team honors.

Wrestling (16-6-1 Overall, 4-0-1 Pilgrim League)
The Wildcats were ranked as high as No. 26 in the NCAA Division III polls during the season. The team continued their dominance in the northeast region, the Wildcats captured their ninth-straight Pilgrim League Championship and placed fourth at the New England Wrestling Association Championships. Sophomore William Mulligan earned All-American accolades while the team also excelled in the classroom, earning the National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar Athlete All-American Team Award..

Men’s Volleyball (8-15 Overall, 4-7 GNAC)
The Wildcats reached the semifinals of the GNAC Championship behind 2010 Coach of the Year Scott Reslow. During the season, the Wildcats played against a dozen top-25 teams.

Baseball (21-21-1 Overall, 11-3 GNAC)
Had their eighth 20+ win season in the last 10 years, finishing in second place in the GNAC standings while reaching the final four of the conference tournament. Led by Coach of the Year John LaRose, the Wildcats placed six on the all-GNAC Squad.

Men’s Tennis (2-10 Overall, 1-3 GNAC)
Despite a very young squad, the Wildcats were competitive during the year, reaching the GNAC semifinals behind a pair of All-GNAC players.

Sailing
The Wildcats had one of the most successful spring seasons in school history, capturing the Williams College Invitational for the first regatta victory in the history of the program. JWU finished in 15th place in the Southern Series standings, the best ever ranking for the Wildcats.
Softball (20-23 Overall, 12-12 GNAC
First year head coach Virginia Cardozzo guided the Wildcats to a school record 20 victories in 2011. The team also appeared in the GNAC Final Four for the first team in school history, losing in extra-innings in the semifinal round.
