Senior Vice President of Student Services, Marie Bernardo-Sousa, announced today that Johnson & Wales University (JWU) will soon add a women’s ice hockey program. “Reflecting our commitment to the student experience, adding women’s ice hockey complements our strategy of career preparation. This emphasis on women’s athletics demonstrates JWU’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young women who are seeking an exceptional educational experience. Student athletes exhibit skills that employers strongly desire including teamwork and discipline,” Bernardo stated.
Throughout the past year, the university has made a strong commitment to athletics adding three new programs and building the school’s first athletic fields on campus. Women’s ice hockey will join the 10 sports currently being offered for women at the Providence Campus and will be the 22nd varsity athletic sport for JWU. The team will first compete as a club in 2014 before going varsity and joining a conference for the 2015-16 season.
Matt McGilvray has been named as the head women’s ice hockey coach (interim) and recruiting coordinator, while also continuing to serve as the assistant men’s hockey coach. JWU will conduct a national search for a permanent head coach in the spring of 2014.
