Winter Sports Ready For Conference Championships
The winter sports teams will open play in their respective conference championships this week.
On Tuesday, February 21st, the men’s basketball team, the third seed in the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship, will host sixth seeded Anna Maria College at the Harborside RAC at 7:00 p.m. The Wildcats, led by senior All-American Lamonte Thomas (Providence, R.I.) finished the regular season with a 12-13 overall mark and an 11-7 record in league play. Thomas once again led the nation (all of NCAA Division I, II and III) in scoring with 34.1 points per game while also averaging 5.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.
The women’s basketball team will also be competing in the 2012 GNAC Championship as the sixth seed on Tuesday, February 21st, when they travel to third seeded Rivier for the quarterfinals, starting at 7:00 p.m.. The Wildcats, 10-15 on the year and 6-7 in the GNAC, are led by sophomore Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) with 14.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
The hockey squad finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 13-9-3 overall record and a 7-5-2 mark in the ECAC Northeast which was good for a fifth-place finish. The Wildcats will travel to fourth seeded Western New England University on Saturday, February 25th at 1:45 p.m. JWU is led by senior All-American Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell, Mo.) who led all of Division III in scoring with 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points on the season.
The wrestling squad, currently ranked No. 27 in the country by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, will travel to Wesleyan for the 2012 New England Wrestling Association Championship on Saturday and Sunday, February 25th-26th. The Wildcats have a wrestler ranked in the top eight in New England in nine of the 10 weight classes. Freshman Frank Marotti (Fairfield, N.J.) is currently ranked second in the NEWA at 165 pounds with a 20-3 record. Junior Connor Nelson (Wakefield, R.I.) has a team-best 22 victories at 165 pounds and is ranked fifth in the NEWA. The Wildcats finished with a 17-4 dual meet record and captured their tenth Pilgrim League Championship.
