Jamie Marcoux and Thom Spann Honored By Words Unlimited
Associate Director of Athletics and Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Jamie Marcoux has captured the Words Unlimited Female Sport Coach of the Year award for the second time during her illustrious 15 year career. Head men’s cross country coach Thom Spann was also honored as the recipient of the Ben Mondor Community Service Award for the work he does with the Providence Cobras Track Club. Both were honored at the 65th Annual Words Unlimited Dinner, held on Sunday evening.
In 2010, Marcoux guided the Wildcats to their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship and fifth NCAA berth where seventh-seeded JWU almost upset second-seeded Stevens Tech before bowing, 3-2. JWU finished the season with a 24-13 overall mark and an 11-1 record in the GNAC, good for a first place finish.
Spann, who guided the Wildcats to the 2010 GNAC Men’s Cross Country Championship, was honored along with Rhode Island College’s Kevin Jackson for the work they do with the Providence Cobras. Over the past three decades, Spann and Jackson have developed hundreds of young athletes, including several Olympians, while doing so on a volunteer basis.
