Fall Sports Receive All-GNAC Accolades

Men’s Soccer

The Men’s Soccer team had three players tabbed as 2011 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selections, announced by the league office.  The Wildcats finished the season with a 5-11-2 record, while recording a 3-5-2 record in conference.

Freshman Goalkeeper Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, Mich.) was named second team All-Conference. In his first year with the Wildcats, Dzierawski made an immediate impact playing in 14 games recording 5 wins and 4 shutouts. Dzierawski saved 79 shots while posting a .775 save percentage. The freshman goalkeeper played 1,324 minutes posting a goals against average of 1.56.

The All-Conference third team includes two Wildcats, senior Adam Shafer (Corning, NY) and freshman O’Kyle Corridon (Seldon, CT). Shafer played in 16 games for the Wildcats, recording 2 goals and 3 assists. Corridon led the Wildcats in games played with 17, while scoring 4 goals on 36 shots and adding 2 assists.

Women’s Tennis

Two freshmen were selected to the Women’s Tennis 2011 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference team, announced by the conference office. Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, NJ) and Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, NY) were named All-Conference second team singles.

Jo Borr posted an 8-3 overall record, including a 3-2 mark in conference play.  Piperis led the Wildcats in wins with an 11-1 record on the season and posted a 5-1 record in GNAC play. Senior Dana Trimborn was also named to the All-Conference sportsmanship team.

JWU finished the 2011 campaign with a 9-7 overall record, 5-4 in the GNAC.  The Wildcats reached the semifinals of the conference championship. 

Men’s Cross Country

After winning their fourth straight GNAC title, five JWU runners were named to the 2011 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference team. Junior Jeff Hartmann (Osseo, Minn.) led the Wildcats with a 1st place finish and time of 26:31. This makes the third straight All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection for Hartmann, who was also awarded All-Conference Runner of the Year.

Sophomore Brian Dinan (Geneva, NY) finished with a time of 27:03, also making his second straight All-Conference selection. Junior Greg Redfield (Penfield, NY) was named to his third All-Conference selection posting a time of 27:06. Senior Nathan Smith (Jamesburg, NJ) posted a time of 27:10 and was named to his fourth consecutive All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection. Smith was also named to the GNAC sportsmanship team. Rounding out the All-Conference selections is freshman David Torres (Ann Arbor, Mich.) after he recorded time of 28:26.

The Johnson & Wales Wildcats finished with 20 overall points to record this year’s championship. Coach Thom Spann was also named the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. 

 

Women’s Cross Country

After winning their second consecutive GNAC title, one Wildcat runner was named to the 2011 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference team. Junior Laura Furfaro (North Warren, NJ) led the Wildcats with a 2nd place finish and time of 20:24. Furfaro was also named to the All-Conference sportsmanship team. The Wildcats captured this year’s conference title with 64 overall points.

 

Women’s Soccer

The JWU women’s soccer team had three players named to the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference selections, announced by the league office.  Johnson & Wales finished the season with an 11-8-2 record, while recording a 9-2-2 record in the GNAC. 

Senior midfielder Kaitlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, CT) was named first team All-Conference. In her fourth year with the Wildcats, Gerrish played in a team leading 20 games recording 7 goals and 8 assists. Gerrish put 27 shots on goal and also had a team high 22 points.

The Wildcats had two other selections to the All-GNAC squads. Awarded second team All-Conference honors were sophomore defender Lauren Donati (Saugus, MA) and freshman forward Kayla Sypek (Westhampton, MA). Donati played in 17 games for the Wildcats, providing outstanding defense for JWU. Kayla Sypek made an immediate impact during her first year on the field as she led the Wildcats in games played (20), goals (8), and added 3 crucial game winning goals. Sypek was also named the GNAC Rookie of the Year. Freshman defender Maggie Castle (Andover, NJ) was named to the All-Conference sportsmanship team.

Women’s Volleyball

Johnson & Wales senior Audrey Warren (Haverhill, MA) was named to the 2011 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference team, selected as an All-Conference third team member. Warren played in a team high 118 sets, while leading the Wildcats in kills (288), service aces (38), and total blocks (52). Warren posted a 2.44 kills per set and also adds 2 assists, 92 digs, and a 0.44 blocks per set. Fellow senior Erin Leahy was named to the All-Conference sportsmanship team.

The Wildcats finished their season with 10-25 record, 8-5 in conference. JWU reached the quarterfinals of the conference championship.
