Words Unlimited Banquet Honors

The athletics department was honored with the Vin Cullen Award at the annual Words Unlimited banquet, held at the Radisson Hotel on Sunday evening.

In 2011, Johnson & Wales University boasted three All-Americans, it marked the first time in the history of the Athletic Department that the school had as many All-Americans in the same year.  Seniors Lamonte Thomas (men’s basketball) and Jeremiah Ketts (hockey) along with junior William Mulligan (wrestling) were honored.

Thomas, the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year, led all scorers in all NCAA Divisions of college basketball with 30.7 points per game and also led the GNAC with 6.1 assists per game.  He was named an All-American by D3Hoops.com and the National Basketball Writers Association, the first time a JWU men’s basketball player has earned that honor.  This year he is again the leading scorer in all of college basketball and is on his way to Player of the Year accolades during his senior campaign.

Ketts, the first JWU player to be named an American Hockey Coaches Association All-American, was the ECAC Northeast Player of the Year and led the team and the conference in scoring with 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points in 2011. His 14 power play goals ranked him first nationally with a 0.54 power play goals per game average.  In 2012, the nation’s leading scorer is well on his way to National Player of the Year honors for his senior campaign.

Mulligan earned All-American status after an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championship.  For the season, Mulligan went 21-6 with four wins via pin fall en route to All-New England and All-American status.
